Medical laboratory testing uses samples taken from individual patients or test groups in order to test for diseases or to further medical research. Employees working in a laboratory will often be technicians or laboratory assistants. Medical laboratory employees do not usually have direct contact with patients and can be based at a number of different locations. While medical testing for existing conditions is often undertaken in hospitals, research will often be based in a separate facility.
